The History & Legacy of Star
Star Building Materials has been a family owned and operated business since 1972. It started out as a part-time used building materials business. Hershell and Nancy Freeman started the company and called it Star Used Building Materials. They let their three small children name the business. Since the children just happened to have a pony whose name was Star, they obviously thought this was the perfect name. The Freeman’s ran their business from a rented lot on Florence Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio and worked there on weekends.
Star eventually became a full-time business and the Freemans were able to purchase the property. In 1984 they purchased property in Florence, Kentucky and opened up current Star Building Materials on Dixie Hwy. The company added another location in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2004. In 2008 they purchased property and built a new store in Fairfield, Ohio moving the Cincinnati location there.
The Freeman’s engraved a great passion for the Construction Industry into their children. This passion is obvious by looking at the wall of Antique brick at the Florence location. They were avid collectors of antique brick since starting the business. They took great pride in their business and strove to offer the best products at the best prices and all while giving their customers the absolute best customer service. The Freeman's sold their business to a young family in 2023, but JoEllen and the entire Star staff continues to work for Star and to do what they do best, ensuring that the Freeman's legacy lives on.
